Pain Management in Chronic Conditions

Dr John Alchin, FFPMANZCA retired from clinical practice at the Pain Management Centre at Burwood Hospital, Christchurch, where he had worked as a consultant since 1998. He still teaches in the Dept of Orthopaedic Surgery & Musculoskeletal Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch.

Mr Simon Goss is a senior clinical psychologist at Te Whatu Ora, Canterbury, working in both the Pain Management Centre at Burwood Hospital, and in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Christchurch Hospital.

Chronic pain impacts on sleep patterns, physical functionality, the ability to complete daily tasks, social relationships, mental wellbeing and overall quality of life.

Pain management is based on a biopsychosocial model; that is, a team of health professionals work together to address the physical, mental, social and cultural aspects of pain to better the patients’ understanding of their condition and enable the development of self-management skills.
