“Daylight saving time: Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket.” – Anonymous

I love daylight savings – unlike many people in the small time of Northern Canada that I used to live in. In fact the people there hated it so much that they no longer follow it, even though all the towns around them do!

It’s great coming home after work to an hour or two more of daylight. I am far more motivated to go out for a walk, or a run, or even to work in our little garden. A glass of wine on the deck before dinner is also very lovely too!

All of us at MS Auckland are working extremely hard, as we look at starting to wrap up 2017 and prepare for 2018. The demands on non-profits like us are perhaps greater than ever before. We are continually looking at ways in which we can keep up with demand, deliver quality services, and balance the books! We have some new ideas that we are just starting to explore. Thank you to everyone that has sent in suggestions and ideas to us. We so appreciate all your input and help!

The big news for us this month is the visit from Italy of Dr Riccardo Saccardi. He will be speaking to us on Stem Cell Transplantation for MS, a topic that is of great interest to many people. Read more about it below and if you are interested be sure to book in as soon as possible to ensure you get a place.

In this issue:

1.Dr Riccardo Saccardi – ‘Stem Cell Transplantation for MS’ – 18 October

2.Hydrotherapy sessions

3.Bike the Bridge – new date for February 2018

4.Our Annual Christmas Party

5.September Magazine and Social Media

You are invited to attend a special presentation by Dr Riccardo Saccari from Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy. Dr Saccardi is a hematologist and has been involved over the last 20 years in the field of Hematopoietic Stem Cells Transplantation, more commonly referred to as HSCT. He will talk for an hour on ‘Stem Cell Transplantation for MS’ with time for questions and discussion.

There has been considerable interest in this presentation and booking is essential, as there is limited seating capacity. Currently we have 30 more places left. Book now to avoid disappointment! Also, in consideration of others, if you have booked and are unable to attend on the night, please let us know so that we can let others come in your place.

There is no cost to attend. Donations to help defray costs of the evening will be taken at the door.

Date: Wednesday 18 October

Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Venue: Novotel Auckland Ellerslie – 72-112 Greenlane East, Ellerslie

2. Hydrotherapy Sessions – Lloyd Elsmore Pool

MS Auckland offers Hydrotherapy classes in 6 different pools across Auckland each week! They are led by Physiotherapists from Rope Neuro Rehabilitation. Research is continuing to show the benefits of water exercises for people with MS. If you haven’t tried it I highly recommend that you give it a go. The first two sessions are free! Talk to your Field Worker or call the office if you are interested in learning more.

Our magazine lists all the pools and session times for hydrotherapy. Copies of the magazine can be downloaded for free from our website.

Please note - Lloyd Elsmore Pool will be changing times slightly after the school holidays. Instead of starting at 11am they will start at 10am and finish at 11.

3. Bike the Bridge

Bike the Bridge has been moved from being a November event to a February event. There are lots of advantages to the change in date, including better chances of good weather and lots of time to be out on your bikes over the summer months and practicing.

This has become a very popular family event. MS Auckland continues to be one of the official charity partners, sharing it this time with Bike Auckland. On registration you can add your donation to either (or both) charities. Over the years people have also set up Give-a-Little or Everyday Hero fundraising pages and used the event to raise funds for MS Auckland. This is a great way to help us to raise much needed funds and to get support from friends and family. If you would like help in setting up a fundraising page please let us know. We would love to help you get started.

4. Christmas Party – Calling all musicians, singers, entertainers!

Yes it’s October, but it is time for us to start thinking about Christmas. Every year we have an annual Christmas lunch, which is a nice time for us all to get together over good food and perhaps a glass of wine, before the year ends.

We would love to have some music and singing and fun entertainment this year. Can you help us out and volunteer your time for us for an hour or two? Or do you know of someone who might like to help us? They will be rewarded with a good lunch and a very appreciative audience

The date is Sunday the 10th of December from 12:30pm to 4pm.

If you can help out in anyway please contact Becky at becky@msakl.org.nz.
