e-newsletter March 2018

e-newsletter March 2018

“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” George Eliot

March is officially autumn here in the southern hemisphere. Coming from Canada, this took a bit of getting used to for me. After 30 years I still think about March as springtime. I love the autumn season though – not too hot and not too cold, but just right!

In this autumn newsletter we have the following for you:

1.MS Auckland AGM – Wednesday 11th April

2.Win an e-bike in the MS Auckland raffle

3.Caffeine and Classics – sausage sizzle Sunday 25th March – Volunteers needed!

4.Access Aware – A great new app for Mobility Parks

5.Life Buoy for MS – Sunday 17th June 2018 – exciting new developments!

1. MS Auckland AGM – Wednesday 11th April at 5 Mayfield Road, Glenfield (Previous MS North Shore Offices)

We are gradually finalising things for our AGM next month and should have the Annual report and Agenda ready for you soon. The venue is now booked (5 Mayfield Road, Glenfield). It was chosen with Graham Wear in mind, who is our special Guest Speaker at the event. Graham was involved with the MS North Shore for many years and was President at the time of the merger between the North Shore Society and the Auckland Society. He then became Vice President of the combined societies and served in that role for many years. Graham’s son, Steven, had MS and unfortunately passed away with pneumonia only 8 years after his diagnosis. Both Graham and his wife Judy have given generously their time and support of the society over many years.

We are looking for new members to join the Committee. It’s a volunteer role with the Committee meeting about 8 to 10 times a year. It’s an important time to become involved as we look to the future and ensure we continue to meet the needs of people living with MS. Download a nomination form and send it in before 5pm on the 9th of April. You can nominate yourself if you wish. You must be a financial member to be on the Committee. If you are interested or would like more information then please talk to any of the current Committee members or contact Ingrid at Ingrid@msakl.org.nz or 021 464 408.

I hope to see you on the 11th of April!

2. Win an e-bike! Raffle tickets only $5 each.

Raffle tickets for an e-bike valued at $2,799 are selling fast. Tickets are just $5 and come in books of 5 – so you can buy a book for $25 and have 5 chances of winning this amazing bike!

Huge thanks to our partner Electric Bikes NZ for their generous donation of the bike and all our ticket sellers for selling the raffle tickets on our behalf. If you can help us in selling tickets we are looking for a few people to sell outside the New World at Stonefields (Lunn Avenue) on the 7th of April. Or, perhaps you can sell some tickets at your work place? Tickets will be sold up to the 2nd of May with the prize draw taking place on the 9th of May. Only 2,000 tickets will be sold so the odds of winning are great.

If you haven’t bought tickets yet, please give Kirsty a call on 09 845 5921 or on email events@msakl.org.nz to find a seller near you, or down load the order form here. Send the form back to us free post and we will mail your tickets out to you. Please also call Kirsty if you can help out in selling tickets.

3. Caffeine and Classics – Volunteer helpers needed for BBQ fundraiser

MS Auckland will be having a stand at the very popular Caffeine & Classics event on the 25th of March. We will have a BBQ and will be looking at raising funds, selling raffle tickets, and raising MS awareness. The popular event is held at Smales Farm at Northcote on the last Sunday of each month. Motorcycles, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Vintage and Classic cars all come out to what has become New Zealand’s largest monthly vehicle gathering.

We need volunteers from 7:30am to 12:30pm to help with the BBQ and to help in selling raffle tickets. Also if you have any contacts of people who would be willing to donate sausages, bread, onions, bacon, etc. we would love to hear from you. Please contact Neil Woodhams on nbw@xtra.co.nz or phone him on 021 531 654

4. Access Aware - A Great New App for Mobility Car parks

This new app, created by CCS Disability Action, allows people to ‘map’ mobility parks nationwide and allows people to ‘dob in’ misusers of the mobility parks to their local council. So far, the app has been trialled in Wellington and Christchurch, and they are hoping the Auckland Council will soon be on board (hopefully by the end of the month), to allow people to start ‘dobbing in.’ In the meantime, you can start mapping the location of mobility parks in your area, as you visit them.

Even if you don’t have a mobility parking permit yourself, you can still join the movement to map the parks and ‘dob in’ misusers, to help others who do need the parks.

See the following links for further info.

7. Life Buoy for MS - Sunday 17th June 2018

Thanks to the hard work of the Life Buoy fundraising committee the plans for the biggest fundraiser of the year are progressing well!

I am very pleased to announce that our MC will be the talented Toni Street, television presenter and radio host. Our special guest is our very own Sam Smith, television comedy writer, comedian and singer.

Tickets for the event will be just $75/person which will include a drink on arrival. A cash bar will be available.

We are still looking for businesses or organisations that would like to sponsor the event. Sponsorship of $1,000 will receive two tickets, advertising in printed and digital media and acknowledgements on the day. Sponsorship of $2,000 will receive four tickets plus further advertising and acknowledgements.

If you own or work for a company that would like to be a Life Buoy for MS sponsor or would like more information please contact Ingrid on Ingrid@msakl.org.nz or phone her on 021 464 408.

Tickets will go on sale after Easter. In the meantime be sure to save the date – Sunday 17th June 2018.
