e-newsletter June 2020

“Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.” ― Dr. Brene Brown

We have just had our first World MS Day zoom event with 58 people registering to hear Dr Sally Shaw speak on connections – Connecting with Self; Community Connectedness; and Connections to Quality Healthcare. What a fabulous morning it was. Dr Sally Shaw, who lives with MS herself, inspired us all with her information and advice. I will be using some of the concepts she shared over the coming months, but there is one thing I would like to share with you now and that is a quote on Selfcare -

Selfcare should not be something we resort to because we are so absolutely exhausted that we need some reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure. (Weist 2017)

Look after yourself each and every day, perhaps with a walk, meditation, yoga, music, art - or anything that serves you best and keeps you feeling good.

In this issue:

1. Annual General Meeting
Thank you for understanding the need for us to postpone our AGM this year due to the Alert levels we were under. We have now set the date for the AGM. It will be as follows:

Date: Thursday 25th June
Time: 7pm
Venue: Remuera Club - 27-33 Ohinerau Street, Remuera, Auckland

Elections for the Board are held every year and nominations are now open. Click the links for the nomination/proxy form and formal AGM notice.

If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of the Board please contact me at ingrid@msakl.org.nz.

Our 2019 Consolidated Accounts are now available on our website and available for download here

After the formal part of the meeting, there will be an opportunity to socialise with Neil, who will not be standing for re-election this year (after 17 years of service to MS Auckland) and the rest of the Board. Wine and snacks will be available (if no restrictions are in place to prevent this).

For catering and seating purposes we would appreciate if you could RSVP if you plan to attend to: events@msakl.org.nz or on phone 09 845 5921.

2. Hydrotherapy Classes
It is great to see Auckland Council re-opening some of their pools from this week. However, they are opening mostly just lane swimming with the areas we use still closed until further notice. Liz has checked with each of our providers directly and this is the situation as of the 2nd of June:

  • Diocesan School Pool still under repair (Saturday class)
  • Lloyd Elsmore Leisure Pool area where MS classes are held has not yet reopened (Tuesday class)
  • Manurewa Leisure Pool area where MS classes are held has not yet reopened (Wednesday class)
  • Epsom Girls Pool also under repair and closed to external groups (Thursday class)
  • Parts of West Wave Pool are open but not the Leisure pool yet, where we are (Friday class)

The School holidays begin Saturday 4th July, and we are still hoping to resume ALL Hydrotherapy classes from the week of 20th July, which is the start of Term 3.

We are also re-introducing a Hydrotherapy class on the North Shore at AUT Millennium to begin on Saturday 25th July at 8 am. This will be a great class for anyone who works during the week or would like to get their exercise over and done with early in the day!

Liz will be keeping you updated with any developments. We are all keen to have this popular programme up and running again as soon as we can!

3. Henderson Exercise Class
The Henderson Exercise4Health class is resuming on Wednesday the 3rd of June at 11 am at the Trust Stadium. The Trust Stadium is open at Alert level 2 with strict safety protocols. Currently, we can have a maximum of 8 participants in the class. All past participants have been notified and have first option to resume.

This exercise class, led by Mira Forrest, has been very popular. If you are interested in learning more and would like to attend future classes please contact Liz at liz@msakl.org.nz.

4. 2008 Disability Drive Car for Sale - Rod Milner Motors
The disability driver vehicle below, being sold at Rod Milner Motors belonged to a member of MS Auckland. We will be receiving from Rod Milner a donation upon its sale. If you are in the market, please check it out.

7. Update of Information
Early this year MS Auckland acquired a new database. Over the lockdown period, we went through the task of transferring information from old to new. This was quite a job, but thanks to a large part of our fabulous Becky, we got there in the end! We now want to make sure we have all your up-to-date details. In the next week, you will be sent a form. Please could you take just a few minutes to fill the form out and help keep us up-to-date.

8. Your Stories
Our next magazine comes out in July and we are still looking for more personal stories that we can share. The stories need to be fairly short (no more than 600 words) and include a photo or two. What kind of stories are we looking for? Anything from lockdown, family, travel, personal project stories, or just day to day living with MS stories. Please send your stories with the subject header ‘My Story’ to me at ingrid@msakl.org.nz.

Every story sent will be acknowledged and much appreciated! A big thank you to Jess who is the first person to send a story into me.
As I write this I’m hearing that we may be moving to Alert Level 1 in another week! I’m very excited to be returning to ‘normal’ while also appreciative of the zoom technology that kept us connected over the past weeks. Our new normal will weave together zoom and face to face to help more people connect with us and increase the number of times we are able to connect.

And finally, some more good news! Tatjana is joining our team on the 8th of June in the new role of Services Manager. We will be profiling her in our next magazine and no doubt she will be looking to meet as many of you as possible over the coming months.

Have a wonderful month, lovely people. Please check us out on our facebook page, if you haven’t already, and keep giving me your feedback. I always love hearing from you.

With love, light and blessings
Ingrid Minett
