“One kind word can warm three winter months” – Japanese Proverb

As I sit and write this with my scarf wrapped around my neck and a hot cup of tea close by I’m reminded of the Japanese Proverb written above. Isn’t it true how kind words can warm!

This month is our big fundraising event, Life Buoy for MS. I am pleased to say that we have completely sold out! Thank you to everyone who has bought tickets to join us, and thanks also to the kind people who have given a donation in lieu of a ticket.

I have lots to share with you this month. Sit back and take a moment to see what’s happening:

1. Life Buoy for MS - Sunday 17th June 2018
This is another sold-out event this year! A big thank you to our kind sponsors who help to make events like this happen - Harcourts Cooper & Co, JUCY and Care on Call.

2. E-Bike Winner

We have a winner! Annie was delighted to receive a call last month to hear that she had won this fabulous prize. Annie bought the ticket at the stall we held one weekend outside the New World at Stonefield’s. She has two uncles living with MS and was very happy to support our raffle, never expecting to win it! Annie tells us that she has a birthday coming up soon and had on her wish list an e-bike. We love making wishes come true!

Thank you to our partner Electric Bikes NZ for donating this great prize. The raffle raised just over $8,000 for services for people living with MS and their families! A great effort! Thank you so very much to all who supported MS Auckland by buying and selling tickets.

3. Pharmac Community Conversations – 14th June 9:30 – 11:00

Pharmac wants to hear what you think and what opportunities there are for them to improve. The Auckland meeting will be on the 14th of June from 9:30 to 11:00 am at the Kelston Community Centre, 126 Awaroa Road, Sunnyvale. You can register at www.pharmac.govt.nz/community-conversations/

For more information please call 04 460 4990 or e-mail enquiry@pharmac.govt.nz

4. Wellness Workshop – Resistance Training 30th of June

We are offering both a morning and an afternoon workshop on Resistance Training on the 30th of June, facilitated by the popular Lisa Gombinsky Roach. Cost of the two hour workshop is just $10. Numbers are limited so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. For more information please click here.

5. Regular Giving and Payroll Giving

Rebecca has MS and works for Spark. She has become one of our regular givers through her payroll. Spark matches Rebecca’s donation. Together they provide MS Auckland with a reliable regular donation every month. Thank you Rebecca and thank you Spark!

Payroll Giving is a wonderful way to double your gift to MS Auckland and make a difference to people living with MS.

If your workplace doesn’t offer Payroll Giving then regular donations set up through your bank or credit card is another easy way to support MS Auckland. All our regular donors receive an annual receipt at the end of the tax year. No amount is too small. Just $10 a month is a great help and very much appreciated.

If you would like more information on monthly donations, please contact Becky at becky@msakl.org.nz or on 09 845 5921.

6. North Shore Hospital Parking

Check this link below and have your say regarding proposed changes to parking around North Shore Hospital.

7. Street Appeal – September 7th and 8th

Charlotte has joined us on a 16 week internship to support our own Kirsty in making this year’s Street Appeal the best Street Appeal yet.

Street Appeal dates this year are Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th of September. If you can spare two hours or more, or if you would like to organise a collection at your workplace or in your neighbourhood they would love to hear from you. E-mail Charlotte at streetappeal@msakl.org.nz.

8. Yoga for Multiple Sclerosis

We would recommend if you are new to exercise that you consult your doctor first. It is always ideal to have the guidance of a physiotherapist or instructor where possible.

PhysUp has developed a free app, Yoga vs. MS which offers up to 30 yoga positions that can help you manage some of the side effects commonly associated with MS:

Fatigue and a general feeling of weakness
Issues with balance and falling
Pain associated with swelling
Mood swings, anxiety, depression and nervousness
Temperature control, mostly through pranayama and breathing exercises

9. For Sale – Bioness L300 Foot Drop System (ex-lease) for sale

Rope Neuro Rehabilitation has a limited number of ex-lease Bioness L300 systems (left and right) available to sell. They are $3,500 and will also require a fitting appointment at $170. The price for a new device is $12,592.50.

The L300 Foot Drop System is a revolutionary medical device that may help you regain mobility and independence. The system’s gait sensor adapts to changes in walking speed and terrain, allowing you to walk easily on stairs, grass and carpet. Comfortably worn under most clothing, the L300 Foot Drop System’s unique design can help you eliminate the need for a rigid ankle-foot orthosis (AFO), or braces, and may reduce the risk of falls and injuries.
