e-newsletter February 2019

e-newsletter February 2019

I have just had a wonderful 6-week vacation seeing family and good friends in Vancouver and Mexico, which I am truly thankful for. What comes hand in hand with this now I am back is a somewhat overwhelming feeling of the amount of work needing to be tackled! It helps me to remember the proverb above and just take things one step at a time!

MS Auckland’s mission is all about making sure that people affected by MS can lead a good, long and fulfilling life. There is so much work to do and we can’t do it without the support of the wider community and people like you. I just want to take this time to thank you so much for taking an interest in our work and for being part of our community.

This month’s newsletter includes information on:

  1. Save the Date – Life Buoy for MS – Sunday 5th of May 2019
  2. Staff Farewells – employment opportunities with MS Auckland
  3. Annual General Meeting – April 2019
  4. Zeosoft and Magic Mud – Natural skincare and cleaning products supporting MS Auckland
  5. Hydrotherapy 2019
  6. MS Diet

1. Save the Date - Life Buoy for MS Sunday 5 May 2019!

Last year’s fundraiser Life Buoy was a fantastic event and this year we plan to build on this success. I hope you will be able to join us to make it another wonderful afternoon at the beautiful Royal NZ Yacht Squadron. The Life Buoy committee is already working hard and I will keep you updated with any progress. We are very excited to confirm that Jennifer Ward-Lealand will be our special guest speaker this year. Jennifer has extensive experience in theatre, film and television. This year Jennifer was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to theatre and the community. Jennifer is my favourite NZ actor and I am thrilled that she is volunteering her time to be our special guest.

2. Staff Farewells – employment opportunities with MS Auckland

Last year two long term Field Workers retired - Carol in February and Diane Hampton in December. This year we will have our remaining long term Field Worker, Dianne Bartlett, retire. Dianne covered the South and East Auckland area. I was very sad to receive her notice and will miss her terribly. She joined the MS society 11 years ago. Besides the tremendous work she did in the community over those years, Dianne also trained and mentored new Field Workers, and gave MS talks to organisations, helping to spread awareness and information on MS.

Dianne’s last day will be April 4th. She leaves big shoes to fill. The position is advertised on Seek. If you might be interested in the role or know of someone who might be please check out the advertisement on Seek. Applications should be sent through Seek.

Our other sad farewell is to our lovely Kirsty who has been in the office overseeing all our projects for nearly 6 years. Kirsty is off to the UK for her OE and plans to be away for about two years. We are sure she will have many wonderful adventures and wish her all the best! The vacancy for her role closes on Friday the 8th of February and is also advertised on Seek.

3. MS Auckland Annual General Meeting – Tentative Date – Tuesday 9 April 2019

This year we hope to have a good turnout for our Annual General Meeting. There will be lots to discuss as we prepare for the future and ensure that we continue to meet the needs of people affected by MS. The AGM is tentatively scheduled for the 9th of April, but we are somewhat dependent on how quickly the auditors can get their job done. We may need an extra week, which will move the AGM to the 16th of April. Please pencil these dates in for now and I will let you know next month which one we will be going with.

Are you interested in joining the MS Auckland Committee? This is a volunteer commitment with meetings generally held every 6 to 8 weeks. Currently meetings are on a Wednesday from 12noon until 2pm. Current committee members are profiled on our website - https://www.msakl.org.nz/committee. For more information on the MS Auckland Committee you can talk to current committee members or e-mail me at Ingrid@msakl.org.nz.

4. Zeosoft and Magic Mud – Natural skincare and cleaning products supporting MS Auckland
Last year Zeosoft and Magic Mud chose MS as their community partner. This means that we receive 40% from all online purchases.

I like to use a number of their products and purchased some to take as gifts for family and friends overseas. Thank you to everyone who has also ordered.

If you haven’t tried the products already please check them out. The Zeosoft face scrub and exfoliating bar are two of my favourites, as well as the Magic Mud tube.

When ordering remember to put MS into the promotion or coupon box to show your support and to ensure we receive the 40%.

The Zeosoft range can be found at www.zeosoft.co.nz

The Magic Mud range can be found at www.magicmud.co.nz

5. Hydrotherapy 2019
Our popular Hydrotherapy classes will be resuming again this month. For information on dates and times please go to our website - hydro

Unfortunately, West Wave Hydrotherapy has been cancelled for this year. We are unable to get a regular schedule of pool time due to maintenance that will be happening throughout the year. The other 5 pools will be running again as usual.

If you have not tried hydrotherapy and are interested in going then it is important that you let your Field Worker know before attending the class. The Field Worker for the North Shore and Central area is Luminita, and she can be contacted on luminita@msakl.org.nz or 021 959 187, or Dianne for the South and East area – Dianne@msakl.org.nz or 021 845 903.

6. MS Diet
Dr Mark Craig is interested in hearing from people who are on a Jelinek or plants based diet and have managed their MS well. He is hoping to put some personal stories together for a medical journal.

To learn more about Dr Craig, or to get in touch with him please go to: http://truesouthmedical.co.nz/

Dr Craig is also taking bookings for consultations on lifestyle medicine.

We can’t serve the MS community without your support. Please, if you haven’t already, consider making a donation today All donations will be gratefully received and donations over $5 will be acknowledged with a tax receipt.

Thank you again for being part of the MS Auckland community.

Until next time,

Best wishes,
