e-newsletter December 2018

e-newsletter December 2018

“Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” -Marcel Proust

Wow! Here we are already at the end of 2018. The older I get the faster the years fly by.

The end of the year is always a good time for reflection and the MS Auckland team has been busy looking at how we can continue to meet the needs of people affected by MS over the coming years. There will be changes of course. We can’t grow if we don’t change. Our core principles however provide the foundation that has served MS Auckland for over 50 years and they will always remain strong.

A big thank you to all our volunteers, donors and supporters. You are so very much valued and appreciated. Sometimes I feel we don’t say it enough, but I hope you all know how special you are to us. And thank you to everyone who has been part of our MS community in Auckland. We are so fortunate and I feel so blessed to be a part of this lovely community..

I wish you and yours a peaceful and joyous Christmas and holiday season!

Here is our last news and events for 2018. Enjoy!

1. Christmas Party – 9th December
2. Farewell to Diane
3. PHARMAC consultation - changes to MS treatments
4. New community partners Zeosoft and Magic Mud – supporting MS Auckland
5. Overcoming MS Retreat dates for 2019 – Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia
6. Helpers needed for 2019 MS fundraising event

1. Christmas Party – Sunday 9th December 2018!
We like to end the year with a party! I hope you will join us for this annual festive event. It will once again be held at the Remuera Club and will start at 12 noon.

Tickets are just $25/person and include a delicious buffet lunch with tea and coffee. A cash bar is also available. To book please phone the office on 09 845 5921 or e-mail events@msakl.org.nz. I hope to see you there!

2. Farewell to Diane
Our wonderful Field Worker for the North Shore, Diane Hampton, is moving on after 14 years supporting people affected by MS. This is her last week with us. She has lots of plans to travel and spend time with family overseas. She will be very much missed by our team and by the people in the community who have gotten to know her.

Diane will be speaking at our Christmas Party on the 9th of December and sharing some of her memories over the past 14 years. If you haven’t had a chance to say farewell to Diane this week then hopefully you can join us on Sunday to say good-bye.

A big thank you to Catherine who will also be finishing off with us at the end of the year. Catherine filled in on contract as our Field Worker in Central Auckland since Carol left earlier this year. She has gotten to know many of you over the short time she has been with us and we have so very much appreciated having her hold the fort for us over the year.

I am so very pleased to announce that we have appointed Luminita as our new Field Worker for 2019. Luminita is very excited to be joining us and will be coming to the Christmas party on Sunday, so if you are there be sure to introduce yourself to her.

3. PHARMAC consultation – changes to MS treatments
Changes are being proposed to some MS treatments. The proposal would mean two things:

  • People taking Copaxone would need to move to a 40 mg, three times a week injection, rather than the current 20 mg daily injection
  • People taking Avonex, Betaferon and Copaxone, would need to pick up their treatments from a community pharmacy, rather than have them sent to an address of their choice.

The consultation on the proposed changes closes on the 21st of December and can be found on their website here: https://www.pharmac.govt.nz/news/consultation-2018-11-30-various-pharmaceuticals/

4. Community Partners – Zeosoft and Magic Mud
We are so excited to have Zeosoft and Magic Mud choosing MS as their community partner. They will be donating to MS Auckland 40% from all online purchases.

I have tried most of their products. They are all 100% natural and I love them! The mineral face scrub is my new favourite in the Zeosoft range. In the Magic Mud range I am now wondering how I ever managed without the ‘Magic Mud Awesome Hand Cleanser’. It is for far more than just hands and has managed to get rid of some difficult laundry stains. I’ve stocked up on these items and others as gifts for my family and friends in Canada.

Purchasing these products is a win/win. You will be getting an excellent, natural New Zealand product and you will be supporting the services of MS Auckland. Just remember to put MS into the promotion or coupon box to show your support.

Shop now for Christmas and get all your Christmas presents sorted!

The Zeosoft range can be found at www.zeosoft.co.nz

The Magic Mud range can be found at www.magicmud.co.nz

6. Can you help us with our fundraising event next year? - Sunday, May 5th 2019
We need to raise 92% of our operating costs each year to run our MS services in Auckland. We do this through grant applications, mail appeals, and fundraising. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters we manage to make it through each year, but it’s not easy!

Next year we will be once again holding our annual fundraising event – Life Buoy for MS. It will be at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron on Sunday the 5th of May.

The event is a lunchtime event with a silent and a live auction. It is a grand affair and does well each year in raising funds for our work. However it is also a lot of work and unfortunately, a number of our Committee members from last year have had to pull out. We are very much in need of more people who can help us in organising the event. Many hands make light work! If you would like to know more information, or if you are interested in helping with fundraising please contact me at Ingrid@msakl.org.nz. I would love to hear from you!

If you can’t give your time to help you may want to consider the following:

Donation of auction items – are you able to donate an item that we can auction off at the event? This could be anything from a voucher for a meal or a hotel, tickets to movies, shows or trips, a day out fishing or whale watching, new appliances or clothing or jewellery, or artwork, or memorabilia. All donations would be most gratefully received.

Purchase of tickets or tables – we have a great group of regular supporters but it would be nice to bring in new supporters. Put together a group of friends, clients, or colleagues and purchase a table for our 2019 event. Tickets will go on sale in March next year so save the date – Sunday 5th of May – and come out and enjoy a fun afternoon at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron supporting MS Auckland!

All support will be so very much appreciated. Please e-mail me if you can help in any way – Ingrid@msakl.org.nz.

This is the last e-news for 2018. Next time you hear from me it will be February 2019. The office will close on Friday 21st of December and will reopen on Monday 7th January.

Thank you once again for your support throughout the year.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays!
