“When you can’t find the sunshine, be the sunshine”

Sometimes it seems that winter just goes on and on. I’m dreaming of summer - long hot days, ocean swims, evening walks... When I start to feel too blue about winter I remind myself of the above quote. It works wonders

1. Invitation to join People with Parkinson’s on 14 August – Special Guest Sir John Kirwan

We have been kindly invited by the People with Parkinson’s team to join them on the 14th of August to hear John Kirwan share his journey through depression. This is something many people living with a chronic condition like Parkinson’s or Multiple Sclerosis can relate to.

Come along and be prepared to learn and share. There is no cost, but a koha at the door is welcome. Also, to get an indication of numbers please be sure to RSVP if you plan to attend to: info@msakl.org.nz.

Date: Tuesday 14 August
Time: 10am for a 10:30am start
Venue: Mt Eden Bowling Club, 16 Stokes Road, Mt. Eden

2. Titirangi Market – Sunday 26 August

Come along, rain or shine, to the Titirangi market on the last Sunday of this month. The Titirangi Potters will be fundraising for MS Auckland. They are furiously making bowls, plates and mugs for this event. At the Market, they will be selling gourmet hand-made soup or baked delicacies, sold on their hand-made plates, bowls and mugs from just $5. You get to take the bowl or plate, made by renowned local potters, home with you! 100% of the profits will go to support the services of MS Auckland.

The pottery sells out each year so be sure to get in early (from 9am) so you don’t miss out.

If you would like to help out with offers to make soup or biscuits or to help on the day, please contact Suzie Beck on suehoyle123@gmail.com.

3. Awareness Week and Street Appeal

Just a month to go for our big annual Street Appeal event! Collectors are still urgently needed. Can you spare just a couple of hours on Friday the 7th or Saturday the 8th of September to help us out? If so, Charlotte would love to hear from you. She is organising our sites and rosters this year and can be contacted at streetappealv1@gmail.com or by phone on 09 845 5921.

We are very excited about Awareness Week this year, thanks to the creative geniuses at Hunch who are gifting us their creative knowledge and a whole bunch more to support this event. The details of activities are still being worked out, but keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more information about the Awareness Week promotions! Huge thanks to the team at Hunch for their generosity and interest in supporting Multiple Sclerosis.

4. Laughter is the best medicine! Comedy show for MS Awareness - Tuesday 4 September 7:30pm

Last year, Sam Smith put together for us a special evening of comedy to kick off MS Awareness Week. We are thrilled to announce that he is doing it again for us this year! Last year’s show was a sell out, so be sure to get in quick this year. We are just finalising the final details and tickets will be going on sale soon through Eventbrite. Paul Ego and Justine Smith, are just two of the big names at this years' show!!

We will be sending out a special e-newsletter with all the information soon. In the meantime save the date so you don’t miss out – 4 September 2018!

5. Skincare and Makeup Fundraiser

Another Awareness Week fundraiser again this year is Rebecca’s online facebook fundraiser with Mary Kay Skincare and makeup. This will take place all week from the 3rd to the 9th of September, with videos, special offers, spot prizes and makeup tips and tricks. Rebecca has so much information to share and does it with fun and flair. She is also a fellow MS warrior and will be donating 20% of all products sold back to support the services of MS Auckland.

To join in on the fun go to the facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/events/172274603623033. Join today! You won’t be disappointed.

6. MS fundraising adventure across 7 Continents – 22 October 2018

Last month I asked if anyone was willing to lead an NZ team to participate in an MS 7 continent event in support of the Detroit Marathon runners. I am delighted to announce that Cherie has put her hand up and will be organising a 10k run in Whangamata on the 22nd of October. Thank you, Cherie!

The 22nd is Labour Day Monday, and Whangamata provides a nice flat 10k circuit that you can walk, run or even bike. So head over to Whangamata for the day or the weekend and take part. It’s free to join in!

We hope to get a bit of local media interest for this event and hope also that people are inspired to donate to MS Auckland through our Givealittle page -https://givealittle.co.nz/donate/org/msaucklandregion

For more information please contact Cherie at c.prescott@hotmail.com.

7. Hydrotherapy

Did you know that there are 6 pools across Auckland each week that provide specialised Hydrotherapy classes for people with MS? You can try two classes for free, and then purchase heavily subsidized quarterly, 6 monthly or yearly memberships to continue taking part in the classes.

Read Karen’s story in our latest magazine (pages 18 and 19) and find out more about the Hydrotherapy sessions.

8. For Sale – Acorn Chair lifts – only $500 each plus installation cost

A member of our community has 2 used Acorn Chair lifts to sell for only $500 each. They are both in very good condition as they were not used much and serviced regularly. They were both supplied and installed by Acorn stairlifts. One was purchased in September 2011 and the other February 2012 at a cost of well over $5,000 each.

Both chair lifts span 8 steps. Acorn will be happy to remove and install them in a different home. There will be an installation cost and additional cost for a new rail if the length of the stairs is different.

For more information please contact Russell on 09 482 2987 or e-mail jackie8@orcon.net.nz.

9. For Sale – 2011 Mobility Van with Hoist

The Otago MS Society is selling their mobility van. They tell me it’s in excellent condition. It has a 3000cc diesel motor and has a manual gearbox. There is room for 2 wheelchairs. The van is listed on Trade Me: https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/toyota/auction-1716495089.htm?rsqid=951ec7a8d4e74c5ab7fbc2604e4a3fac

Delivery to Auckland can be negotiated. For more information contact Allan on 027 442 6056 or tevoitd@gmail.com

That’s all for now, but I’ll be back shortly with an update on information and tickets for ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’.

Wishing you sunshine wherever you go,

Ingrid Minett
