“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion”. Dalai Lama

This quote by the Dalai Lama came to my mind because I have been overwhelmed recently with the compassion of others. We are fortunate at MS to be surrounded by compassionate people supporting the work we do for people and families affected by MS. Isn’t it wonderful though that as we show kindness and caring and give to others, we not only make them happy, but we also become happier in the process.

The next two months will continue to be busy as we wrap up the years activities (finalising with our very popular MS Christmas party) and plan for 2018. I am very excited for Bike the Bridge, which has moved from a November event to a February event. If you have done it before you will know how much fun it is, and if you haven’t then next February will be a great time to give it a go!

We have lots of news to report in this issue. Happy reading!

In this issue:

1. MCANZ – providing support in obtaining a more affordable alternative to Sativex

2. Volunteers needed – help improve MS information and services for family planning

3. More help still needed for New MS research being conducted at Auckland University

4. Bike the Bridge – new date Sunday 18th of February 2018

5. Jubilee Sailing Trust – December and New Years’ sailings

6. MS Christmas Party – Sunday 10th of December

1. MCANZ – Helping people obtain Cannabis based medicines to treat their condition legally

Medical Cannabis Awareness New Zealand (MCANZ) is dedicated to helping patients obtain Cannabis based medicines legally.

MCANZ has helped a handful of MS patients access more affordable alternatives to Sativex under the Non Pharmaceutical application pathway with 100% success due to the high levels of evidence for treating spasticity in MS. MCANZ is on the cusp of announcing a new range of products that will be available from early 2018 and are projected to cost half as much as Sativex, with options of varying strengths. If you are interested in support from MCANZ in obtaining a more affordable Cannabis based medicine please sign up on our webpage http://mcawarenessnz.org/sign-up/

3. More help still needed for New MS research being conducted at Auckland University

In July we wrote to you about the research team in the School of Medical Sciences of Auckland University conducting new and exciting research into the causes of blood brain barrier (BBB) compromise in patients with MS. They have had a number of participants in the study, but are still looking for more.

To participate in the study (a) you must have a diagnosis of MS (any form of this disease) and (b) will receive an MRI scan as part of your clinical assessment. If you are interested, they would meet with you to discuss the research project, explain what your commitment would be and answer any questions. Essentially all they require is a simple blood sample from you within a week of your MRI scan and then again in three months-time.

For more information and to participate please contact Dr Dan Kho on: d.kho@auckland.ac.nz, or09 923 1425, or on mobile 027 559 3075

4. Bike the Bridge – Sunday 18 February, 2018

Lock the date in your calendar for 2018! You can register here.

This has become a very popular family event. MS Auckland continues to be one of the official charity partners, sharing it this time with Bike Auckland. On registration you can add your donation to either (or both) charities.

Over the years people have also set up Give-a-Little or Everyday Hero fundraising pages and used the event to raise funds to support the services offered at MS Auckland. All donations over $5 are tax deductible and very much appreciated!

If you would like help in setting up a fundraising page please let us know. We would love to help you get started.

5. Jubilee Sailing Trust

The Jubilee Sailing Trust has two more sailings offering an experience of a lifetime on the water. These sailings are as follows:

  • Melbourne to Auckland – from the 2nd to the 21st of December 2017

Harness the power of wind and ocean as you sail from Australia to New Zealand the traditional way. This is the opportunity of a lifetime, blue water sailing out of sight of land, experiencing the passage tall ships were made to sail. Along with the variety of marine life you’ll encounter on this longer passage voyage across the Tasman Sea, you’ll experience the routines of the ship, learn new skills like celestial navigation, and form deep and lifelong friendships. While you enjoy the rhythms of wind and waves as you settle into life with your watch and the routines of the ship. Enjoy putting your new skills to the test in this challenging blue water crossing, and feel the satisfaction when you get your first sight of Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud.

The cost of this trip is NZ$5,310. A special offer is available for booking 2 berths – book 2 berths and get a 3rd berth free! Use booking code AUCK2PPL when making your booking.
