Opening of the new
MS Society office

7B Taylors Road, Morningside, Auckland
19 November 2000

Our move to new offices signals a fresh approach for MS Auckland and provides the chance to work more closely with five other neurological organisations known as The Neurological Support Centre and located literally next door. We hope that through collaboration with them and pooling of resources, we shall be able to enhance the services we provide.

Over 70 people came to see our new premises on opening day. Special guests included Chris Carter, MP for Te Atatu, and Dr Ernie Willoughby, leading New Zealand neurologist who is our Patron and has a special interest in MS. Chris reassured us of the Labour Government's commitment to our cause and Dr Willoughby gave a balanced account of the frustrations and exciting developments with regard to medical research into MS.

Judith Bassett, Chairperson of The ASB Trust, our generous sponsors of the premises, was also present.

Special thanks to Avril Proud, a longstanding member of the Committee for her honest account of her struggles with MS and her words about how the Society's support has enabled her to thrive in spite of MS. Her story encapsulates our vision, "around MS, people thriving."

Thanks too to Doug Trethowen, another Committee member who provided temporary wheelchair access and to Joan Thomson (our Secretary/Treasurer) and her daughter for their tireless assistance on the day.

Jo Smith marked the opening symbolically with a flourish of the scissors to cut the red ribbon. We celebrated thereafter with wine and food accompanied by the magical strains of Margaret Cook on her cello.
