Residential Retreat 2008
3rd - 7th
June
Following the great
success of last year’s retreat at Mana, MS Auckland
would like to offer its
members the chance to attend this programme again. Professor George Jelinek,
author of 'Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis', will once again lead the
course and be on hand to give advice and answer questions.
Held in the serene
surroundings of the Coromandel, this 5 day retreat has been a life-changing
experience for many who attended last year. This is definitely a
course
for those who are looking for new ways to minimise the impact of MS on their
lives, and to deal pro-actively with the condition.
Due to limited
numbers and high demand, places get filled very quickly, so we strongly
recommend booking as soon as possible. For

The Healing Power of Mind Workshop
Saturday, 10th May 08
There is much talk these days about the
amazing power of mind. The big challenge is how to get it working for us in a
way that supports our health and happiness. This workshop, facilitated by Bev
Silvester-Clark will be devoted to just that. More

Retreat '07
On Monday 7th
May a group of people with MS from all over NZ descended on
the tranquil calm of the
Coromandel to the Mana Centre for the first Retreat ever run by Prof. George
Jelinek in NZ. This retreat WAS based on the lifestyle promoted in his book
“Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis”. The week was a great success with
overwhelmingly positive feedback from those that attended, some of whom came
from as far afield as Dunedin and the West Coast.
We asked Rachel
Cutherbertson, one of the participants to reflect on the week:
I wasn’t really sure
what to expect at the Mana Retreat. The brochure said, “This experience will
give them (us) the tools for better health and well being”. I had read Professor
George Jelinek’s book, “Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis” and loved it but
still felt there was more I could be doing to help myself. So my Mum and I
headed off to Mana, which is located on a hill overlooking the sea in the
Coromandel. Everyone at the retreat admitted to being a little nervous about the
week ahead but there was nothing to fear, the retreat was supportive and
positive and I met some wonderful people.
During the week the
importance of diet for people who have MS was explained and emphasised. In the
dim past I did a Science degree so was already sold on the theory behind the
diet. The food provided at Mana was delicious and we came away with some great
recipes which will make following the diet easier.
The retreat introduced
me to some valuable self-help and self-healing techniques such as meditation and
reminded me of what is important to me. It helped me to discard old stresses and
to be more accepting of and kinder to myself and others. There was laughter,
music, tears and acceptance.
I came away with some
valuable knowledge and useful tools to face the challenges that life throws my
way. I discovered Tofu can be delicious and made many new friends. It was a life
changing and life enriching experience. I feel that I have been given a formula
which will allow me to live a happier, healthier and more balanced life.
I want to thank
Professor George Jelinek, Sandra Neate, Paul Bedson, Maia Bedson, MS Auckland
and the staff at Mana for an incredible week.

Welcome!
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and, so far, incurable disease of the central nervous system.
In New Zealand, more than 4,000 people have MS and another 200 are diagnosed with the disease every year.
Multiple Sclerosis can be very debilitating, but most people with MS are able to lead a fairly normal life most of the time.
The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Auckland is a registered charity serving people with MS and their families in Auckland, Manukau and Waitakere Cities, as well as Papakura and Franklin Districts.
